Importing files from Eudora to Becky
I couldn't find it on the web, so I'll blog it here in the hope that it helps someone. It's quite easy. The following instructions are for a simple example; modify to suit your situation.
First, please make sure that you don't have any files named Outbox.mbx or Inbox.mbx under
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora
If you do, please rename them.
Install Becky, but don't uninstall Eudora yet.
Run Becky, rightclick upper left of Inbox, Property, set your servers.
Now you may import from other folders, as follows:
Leftclick the folder under which you want to make a new folder.
File, Import..., UNIX mbox, OK.
click Yes that you want to import messages to the folder
which has the same name as the source file.
Navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora
*.mbx
Open
You'll see some .mbx files. Ctrl left-click each one that you want to import. I hope that none of them are named Inbox.mbx or Outbox.mbx, if so, please rename those and redo (if it's outbox.mbx then they may be re-sent, and this could be embarrassing).
Cleanup
If you uninstall Eudora, you may remove the .mbx files but do not remove the ATTACH folder Qualcomm\Eudora\attach because attachments were not copied in the import! If you look at an imported message with an attachment, you'll see on the last line for example:
Attachment Converted: "c:\xxx\Eudora\attach\V161NADL.mpg"
I'm a little disappointed in Becky!s Find / Search capability, though, so I might revert to Eudora. It's a pain converting back and forth like this...
Voice recorder with timestamp accuracy to the second.
I searched several months for a voice recorder that timestamps the recording, and the accuracy of the timestamp is down to the second. Why would anyone need this? I'm often conducting experiments in which the test subjects speaks about 3 utterances per minute. I need to annotate a comment on each. Writing the comment is too slow, so I use a voice note recorder. I use the timestamp to later correspond the note with the collected utterance. If my timestamp is only precise to the minute, I can't find the correspondence.
Most handheld digital notes recorders (Olympus, Canon, Casio) are only to the second. One way around this would be to use a laptop PC to do the recording, but this is very cumbersome and would limit the session to about 2 hours if external power is unavailable. An older MD deck with VOR feature works, but the timestamp is precise only to about 10 seconds. Newer MDs display the timestamp only to the minute. Recent Palms have a Voice Recorder feature, but they display and store the timestamp only to the minute.
But if you use a Sony Clie PEG-TG50 or similar model, and store your voice notes on the memory card, then the file creation times will be precise to about 2 seconds. This is plenty for my purpose. For this one needs the Clie handheld, MSImport running on it, and the hotsync cradle with USB.
- Install MSImport on the Clie if it isn't preinstalled
- Run MSImport
- Connect Clie to Cradle, and Cradle to USB on a Windows PC.
- You'll see an external disk recognized.
- Navigate to the WAV files and examine their creation times.
Windows Explorer displays only to the minute, but the more precise information can be gathered by using Perl or Cygwin (ls --full-time)
Just returned from Geneva, Switzerland; stayed at Hotel Chantilly Manotel. It's still under construction, so it's quite noisy. Just outside my room were the dumpsters next to a bar: noisy at 10pm with people, smelly in the morning with old garbage, except for those nights when the trash trucks come, and in this case it's noisy at 4AM. This even with double-pane windows! On my first night, I was awakened at 3pm by a pounding noise. It was the air conditioner! I turned mine off, but still heard the noise until a neighbor turned his off. One by one guests turned it off, until after about half an hour later it was rather quiet. Geneva must have better hotels.
Spent the next night at Holiday Inn at Heathrow Airport. Much better in terms of quiet. What to do if you have only a couple of hours at Heathrow airport but want to walk around? Take the "Hotel Hoppa" bus to Holiday Inn. Behind it is a residential area. If you have a full day, try the bus to Windsor and back. Easy to do in a day.
